The search for Big Jim Williams’ final resting place has taken fascinating turns. Just before Christmas, a whirlwind of new information came in, thanks to the dedicated research of Jennifer Bibb (University of North Florida) and Georgia Pribanic (Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society).
Their incredible work led them deep into the records of the Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society, combing through extensive documentation for Memorial, Sunset, and Mount Olive Cemeteries. I owe them a huge thanks for their diligence and expertise!
Conflicting Clues
A newspaper article pointed to Memorial Cemetery as Big Jim’s burial site, while Georgia uncovered his death certificate, which listed Mount Olive Cemetery instead. Since these cemeteries are close to each other, it’s no surprise that early reports might have mixed up the details.
Jennifer conducted further investigations but couldn’t find Williams’ name among the marked graves listed in a 1997 survey by Environmental Services, Inc. This report also offered insight into the cemetery’s history—revealing changes in platting and ownership over time. Unfortunately, many records seem to have passed into private family hands rather than official archives.
Honouring Big Jim’s Legacy
Though his exact burial site remains unknown, we’ve taken a significant step in ensuring Big Jim Williams’ legacy is preserved. Mount Olive Cemetery has an option for historical markers, recognizing individuals who contributed to Florida’s history in architecture, archaeology, or other fields.
Jeremy Krock of the Negro Leagues Grave Marker Project is now looking into whether Big Jim qualifies for this recognition. If so, it could be a powerful way to ensure his contributions are remembered.
We’ll keep you posted if anything new emerges. Thank you to everyone supporting this journey, and please continue to share Big Jim’s story.
